Commercial dungeness crab season has officially begun in the Bay area, officials announced on Tuesday. The price for the local crab was set for $2.90 per pound, without any objection from the Buyers and the Crab Fisherman Association.
The price of the crab was set in a a closed-door meeting of officials and crab fishermen. Earlier, Bay Area's Dungeness crab season had been delayed for so long due to high level of domoic acid in crabs. This acid posed a health risk in human beings. Public health agencies suggested people not eat the internal organs of the crab like butter or guts, while now, the level of domoic acid in crabs is safe for the human consumption.
The Captain of Huli Cat, Tom Mattusch, said that, "We just started to see boats loaded now. We're starting to see the bustle and the activity." "Lots of people, lots of trucks on the pier. This is what we want," Mattusch said.
