One of the two people, who became critically ill and was hospitalized after consuming herbal tea has passed away, the San Francisco Department of Public Health announced on Monday afternoon.
In two different incidents, a 56-year-old San Francisco woman and a man in his 30s became critically ill within an hour of consuming tea from leaves supplied by the same San Francisco herbalist.
The tea leaves were bought at the Sun Wing Wo Tading Company in San Francisco’s Chinatown.
Within an hour of drinking the tea, both the victims developed weakness and then life-threatening abnormal heart rhythms, requiring resuscitation and intensive hospital care.
During the lab test of the patient and the tea leaves, examiners found a plant based toxin, Aconite.
Dr. Tomas Aragon, the health officer for the city and county of San Francisco said that the toxin attacks the heart and can be lethal.
According to health officials, there is no antidote for aconite poisoning.
The products consumed by the two patients were removed from the shelves, by health inspectors of the health department's environmental.
The employees at Sun Wing Wo Trading Company is cooperating with the health department inspectors to trace the source of the toxin and ensure safety for future consumers.
The male patient recovered and was released, while the female patient remained in the hospital until she passed away on Saturday.
