Oakland:
All the city workers, joined together to celebrate May day march at Frank H. Ogawa Plaza in Oakland, Cliff on Tuesday May 1st,, 2018, many people carried colorful signs and banners, to demonstrate the champion on endless array of universal causes , both locally and nationally.
They marched with few demands like Better working conditions in Tesla Factory, in Fremont. A minimum living wages for workers in San Francisco, The end of Immigration Policies, that is causing difficulties for the families living apart.
As the same date of the day symbolize International Workers Day, the organizers wanted to spread their message of solidarity across the issues to the hundreds of people who gathered for a march all through downtown in Oakland.
One of the organizing leaders Clarence Thomas, said that “Immigrant rights are workers rights”, Thomas was an organizer with the local, International Longshore and Warehouse Union, as he led the crowd by raising slogans as “Workers rights are immigrant rights.”
Another May Day organizer, Wassim Hage, belonging to Arab Resource and organizing center, said during the gathering that, he was intended to send a message of support for workers, immigrants and marginalized communities.
Despite many range of issues on display, Hage said that the common thread among them was their fight for justice.
Hage also pointed out to an increased energy for activism and civic engagement in the current political climate. He added saying that “People are more agitated and more fired up, especially if you look at what’s going on in the world”
The May day rally and demonstrations were concluded at Lake Merritt Amphitheater with a resource fair of participating organizations, which set up tables and handed out flyers to the demonstrators. Volunteers, walked through the crowd, collecting responses for the question, if they have registered for their right to vote or not.
The Oakland Police department officials also extended support by saying that, it was a peaceful one
