On Monday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised the team behind the Manipuri-language movie Boong for winning the BAFTA Award for Best Children and Family Film. He shared his thoughts on X, stating, “Congratulations to everyone involved with this film. This is truly a wonderful time, especially for Manipur. It also shines a light on the great creative skills present in our country. ” Boong made history at the 79th British Academy of Film and Television Arts Awards held in London, being the only Indian film to win an award at this year's event. The film secured the BAFTA for Best Children and Family Film, marking an important achievement not just for Manipuri cinema but also for Indian regional storytelling on the world stage. This victory is viewed as a point of pride for Manipur, a state that often has its artistic contributions overlooked in mainstream Indian cinema. The Prime Minister’s message highlighted the cultural significance of this accomplishment, referring to it as a celebration of India's “great creative skills. ”

The BAFTA Awards, given out each year by the British Academy of Film and Television Arts, are among the highest honors in international cinema and television. Boong's success in the Children and Family Film category reflects increasing global acknowledgment for tales that originate from India's rich variety of languages and cultures. Voices from the film industry and movie lovers have celebrated this win as a significant breakthrough for Northeast Indian cinema. With this achievement, Boong not only elevates the status of Manipuri-language films but also strengthens the growing presence of Indian cinema on major international stages.
